Peter O’Donnell and Jim Holdaway created Modesty Blaise for the U.K.’s Daily Express in 1963.  Despite being rejected by the Express, which felt its readers would frown on the adventures of a female gangster-turned-spy, she quickly became a success in other papers and in other media, including a film in 1966 starring Monica Vitti.
