“It sits like a rich kid’s abandoned toy, once very exotic and very expensive, now consigned to an unused corner of the garage,” wrote LIFE when Congress finally terminated the American SST program in 1971.  France and Britain’s Concorde ultimately would enter service, but now its time has passed as well.  A beautiful dream dispelled by harsh economic realities, it seems unlikely that SSTs will take flight again.
